Still, the people of the country were not able to cultivate this plant until the end of the 19th century (about 110 years ago) until a person named "Haj Mohammad Mirza" Kashif al-Sultan, who had travelled to India as an Iranian diplomat, got to know the climate suitable for growing this plant. Despite the strict policies of England against other countries in the field of tea planting and trade, he smuggled its seedlings into Iran.

This Iranian diplomat took the tea plant to the plains and green fields of the hills of Lahijan, located in Gilan province and planted it there because of the favourable weather conditions. After a short period, the people of different areas of Gilan and Mazandaran started cultivating tea plants in their fields due to favourable weather conditions. In this way, tea replaced coffee as the most popular drink in Iran.

Today, the tomb of Haj Mohammad Mirza Kashif al-Sultaneh (known as the father of Iranian tea) is located in the National Tea Museum of Iran, in Lahijan Tea Hill.
